There are several everyday habits that can negatively affect the health and appearance of your skin. What are they?

Exposure to free radicals from pollution, cigarette smoke, and UV rays is known to damage skin cells. However, environmental factors are not the only cause. Certain daily habits can also contribute to skin damage over time.
Here are some common habits that may harm your skin:
1. Using Skincare and Cosmetics with Excessive Alcohol Content
Alcohol is often added to skincare and cosmetic products to create a lighter texture and help preserve the formula. In small amounts, it is generally safe. However, products with high concentrations of alcohol may damage the skin, especially for those with dry, sensitive, eczema-prone, or allergy-prone skin. Choosing alcohol-free products may be a better option for these skin types.
If you experience irritation after using a skincare product, consider taking a short break from it (skin fasting) to determine whether the product is causing the inflammation.
2. Sleeping with Makeup Still on Your Face
Going to bed without removing your makeup allows dirt, oil, and cosmetic residue to accumulate on the skin. This can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Always remove your makeup thoroughly using a makeup remover or double cleansing method, followed by washing your face before bedtime.
3. Not Cleaning Makeup Tools Regularly
Makeup brushes, sponges, and other tools can become breeding grounds for bacteria when not cleaned regularly. Using dirty tools on your face increases the risk of skin irritation and infection. To prevent this, wash your makeup tools routinely with warm water and a gentle soap.
4. Over-Exfoliating Your Skin
Exfoliating too frequently can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause irritation. Facial scrubs should generally be used no more than two to three times per week. If you have dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin, once or twice a week is usually sufficient. Avoid exfoliating when your skin is already dry, irritated, or inflamed.
5. Taking Long, Hot Showers
Spending too much time in the shower can dry out and damage the skin. Ideally, showers should last between 5–10 minutes. Additionally, avoid using excessively hot water when showering or washing your face, as it can strip away natural moisture and may even cause skin irritation or burns.
In addition to the habits mentioned above, smoking, consuming alcoholic beverages, frequent stress, snacking on sugary foods, and lack of sleep can also cause the skin to appear dull and accelerate the aging process.
Which of these habits do you find yourself doing most often? Start avoiding them today to help maintain healthy, glowing, and youthful-looking skin.
