Chemical Sunscreen: What You Need to Know Before Using It!

Chemical sunscreen is a type of sunscreen that works by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation and converting it into heat, which is then released through the skin. This helps protect the skin from direct exposure to UV rays.

The use of sunscreen, including chemical sunscreen, aims to prevent the harmful effects of exposure to ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, such as premature skin aging, skin darkening, skin cell damage, and even serious health problems such as skin cancer.

Chemical Sunscreen and Other Types of Sunscreen

Sunscreens are generally divided into three types: chemical sunscreen, physical sunscreen, and hybrid sunscreen. These types differ based on their ingredients and how they protect the skin.

Chemical sunscreen contains organic UV filters, such as homosalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate. These ingredients absorb UV radiation and convert it into a less harmful form of energy. In contrast, physical sunscreen contains mineral-based ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

The way they work is also different. Chemical sunscreen absorbs UV radiation and converts it into heat, while physical sunscreen sits on the surface of the skin and helps block and scatter UV rays, which is why it is often referred to as sunblock.

There is also hybrid sunscreen, which combines the ingredients and characteristics of both chemical and physical sunscreens. Therefore, choosing the right sunscreen should be based on your skin type and individual needs, while considering the advantages and disadvantages of each type.


Benefits of Chemical Sunscreen

The ingredients in chemical sunscreen provide several benefits that may make this type of sunscreen a convenient choice. Some of its advantages include:

  • Easy to use and available in various forms, such as lotions, creams, and sprays

  • Lightweight and less likely to leave the skin feeling greasy or sticky

  • Has a lightweight texture and does not usually leave a white cast

  • Some formulations are water- and sweat-resistant, making them suitable for activities such as swimming

  • Provides effective protection against UVA and UVB rays when used correctly


Drawbacks of Chemical Sunscreen

Although chemical sunscreen can provide effective protection against UV radiation, some people may experience unwanted reactions depending on the formulation and their skin sensitivity. Potential drawbacks include:

  • May be more likely to cause allergic reactions in some individuals

  • Can cause irritation or inflammation, particularly on sensitive skin

  • Some formulations may need to be applied before sun exposure to allow the product to form an even protective layer

  • Certain UV-filter ingredients can be absorbed through the skin, although this does not necessarily mean they are harmful when used as directed

  • Some formulations may aggravate certain skin conditions, such as melasma or rosacea


Before using a chemical sunscreen, make sure your skin is not sensitive to any of its ingredients. Choose a sunscreen that suits your skin type and provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30. A higher SPF provides greater protection against UVB, although no sunscreen can block 100% of UV radiation. If you have uneven skin tone or want additional coverage, you can also consider using a tinted sunscreen.

Always use sunscreen when engaging in outdoor activities. Sunscreen may also be useful indoors, especially when you spend time near windows or in areas where sunlight can reach your skin.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, reapply sunscreen approximately every 2 hours, or more often after swimming, sweating, or towel drying, depending on the product's instructions.
